About Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom
Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom is Chicago’s 5,000-capacity Uptown concert room, built around a grand general-admission floor and an upstairs seated section facing the stage. Its defining feature remains a 1926 atmosphere: balconies, a starry courtyard-style ceiling and a maple floor suspended on cork, felt and springs. That original floor gives a full-room crowd a faint bounce, making the architecture part of the show as much as the stage.
A ballroom becomes a concert hall
Andrew and William Karzas opened the Aragon on July 15, 1926 as a formal dance hall, expanding on the success of their earlier Trianon Ballroom. Huszagh & Hill gave the building a Spanish Baroque exterior, while movie-palace designer John Eberson shaped the interior as a Moorish-courtyard fantasy. The venue’s subsequent lives included a roller rink, boxing, disco and a 1966–68 run as the Cheetah Club.
A decisive shift arrived in 1973, when Jam Productions took an exclusive lease that lasted 40 years and established the Aragon’s modern concert identity; Live Nation assumed day-to-day operations in 2013. One vivid late chapter came on October 23 and 25, 1993, when Nirvana played its final Chicago shows here, including the sole live performance of “You Know You’re Right.”
The room today
The Aragon books national acts across styles, with indie, rock, emo, hip-hop and electronic music especially prominent; its current calendar also reaches into Latin, pop, R&B, jazz and classical programs. Concerts center on the broad standing floor, with limited upstairs seats offering an elevated view. Early arrival matters for close-stage positions. The room’s high dome creates a swirling reverb that performers have described as acoustically demanding, even after curtain treatments improved it.
