About Beat Kitchen

Beat Kitchen is a 275-capacity Chicago music room whose main distinguishing feature sits behind its restaurant frontage: the building’s back room once served as a neighborhood butcher shop and now holds the stage. The 1889 structure gives the venue an unusual split personality, with a concert space, full kitchen, private bar, and outdoor patio operating under one roof. For a showgoer, that means a small-room set with dinner and drinks close at hand.

From butcher shop to benefit stage

Alan Baer opened Beat Kitchen in 1990, according to a WTTW oral-history collection; the venue’s own history places it in an 1889 building and identifies the former butcher shop as the room converted for music. Robert Gomez took ownership in 2005, continuing a format built around bands, comics, food, and a neighborhood bar. During Chicago’s 2020 stay-at-home order, the venue faced an extended closure and launched a Save Our Stages fundraiser, with its general manager describing a 30-year run of artists and staff tied to the room.

A recording offers one durable snapshot of the stage’s musical life: drummer Steve Smith’s Vital Information captured “The Perfect Date” at Beat Kitchen for the 1999 live release Live Around the World: Where We Come From. The album credits Kevin Chalfant and Rick Powell for the Chicago recording, placing the club alongside dates taped in Amsterdam, Toronto, and Sydney.

The room on show night

Beat Kitchen books touring and local musicians alongside comedians and other artists, with shows scheduled almost nightly. Its current calendar moves across punk, indie, pop, blues, jazz, goth, electronic music, bluegrass brunches, and dance events, so genre boundaries stay wide. The main room holds 275 standing guests, with a 20-by-15-foot stage, a private bar, and a 75-seat patio; the house specification lists a Midas M32 front-of-house console, EV main speakers, and dual 18-inch subwoofers. DJs supply their own turntables.
