La Monnaie / De Munt

La Monnaie / De Munt is Brussels’s 1,130-seat national opera house, occupying the third theatre built on this former mint-site plot. Its defining historical night came with Auber’s The Mute of Portici in 1830, a performance tied to Belgium’s struggle for independence. For concertgoers, that political history sits inside a red-velvet and gilt-stucco auditorium, with a large stage and an orchestra pit that can rise to stage level.

Three theatres and a revolutionary evening

Gio Paolo Bombarda set the story in motion in 1695, commissioning a public home for opera, theatre and ballet; architects Paolo and Pietro Bezzi completed it in 1700 on the site of the Herberge van Oistervant mint. Napoleon ordered a replacement theatre in 1800, and Louis Damesme’s new house opened in 1819.

Three theatres and a revolutionary evening

The 1830 staging of The Mute of Portici supplied the house with its charged place in Belgian history. Fire then destroyed the interior in 1855, leaving the façade, colonnade and pediment; architect Joseph Poelaert’s third theatre opened in 1856. A 1985–86 restoration rebuilt the nine-storey stage tower within the existing walls, while new rehearsal studios and workshops arrived behind the theatre in 2000.

A repertory room for focused listening

La Monnaie works as a curated, season-led presenting house: opera forms the core, with orchestral concerts, song recitals, chamber music and Troika dance sharing the programme. The 2026–27 slate ranges from Gounod and Berg to Beethoven concerts, contemporary chamber opera and dance. Inside, the royal box sometimes extends the stage, while the Grand Foyer serves refreshments and also hosts chamber concerts and opera introductions. Expect assigned seating, formal theatrical scale and a room designed for attentive acoustic listening.
