Flagey

Flagey in Brussels is a culture house inside the former National Institute for Radio Broadcasting, with Studio 4 offering a capacity of up to 862 seated listeners. Its distinction is unusually literal: concerts happen in a 1930s broadcast studio designed around acoustic and technical demands, inside Joseph Diongre’s streamlined, ocean-liner-shaped Art Deco building. For a show-goer, that means a formal seated room with the proportions and purpose of a working sound laboratory, plus a programme that shares the building with film and recording.

A radio house rescued

Belgium’s NIR emerged in 1930, and a 1933 architectural competition selected Joseph Diongre to create the new broadcasting headquarters. Built between 1935 and 1938 and inaugurated in 1938, it carried radio broadcasts, recordings and public concerts; television arrived in 1953. The broadcaster departed for Boulevard Reyers in 1974, while cultural organisations used the premises until 1995. The decisive turn came after partial heritage listing in 1994: asbestos forced permanent closure in 1995, then Maison de la Radio Flagey bought the property from VRT and RTBF on 30 June 1998. Its restoration, including a reshaped Studio 4, finished in 2002, returning the building to music, recording, cinema and public events. That arc gives a concert here an architectural backstory sharper than retro décor: the room was created for broadcast sound, fell silent amid a preservation crisis, then reopened with its central studio expanded for audiences.

The room now

Flagey books jazz, world, classical and contemporary music alongside moving-image events, and its stated policy places younger Belgian artists alongside internationally established names. Studio 4 supplies the principal concert experience: 502 seats on the floor, 300 across balconies, plus up to 60 stage places. A wide 18-metre stage and 15-metre depth suit orchestras as comfortably as amplified ensembles. Smaller Studio 1 seats 156, while Studio 5 serves conferences and projections, giving festival bills and cross-disciplinary evenings room to spread through the building.
