About BOZAR

BOZAR’s principal room, the 2,150-seat Henry Le Bœuf Hall, is an Art Deco concert space designed by Victor Horta. It sits within Brussels’ Centre for Fine Arts, a building whose 1928 opening joined music, visual art, film and performance under one roof. For concertgoers, the draw is a large, carefully tuned auditorium built in an egg-shaped form of reinforced concrete, with the scale for orchestra and the detail for acoustic listening.

A palace built for music, tested by fire

The project began with a 1913 wish from Queen Elisabeth and King Albert I for a “temple” for music and the arts. After the First World War, Horta developed the Centre for Fine Arts in a geometric Art Deco language; the building opened in 1928, while the Henry Le Bœuf Hall opened on 19 October 1929. Banker and music patron Henry Le Bœuf backed its creation and gave the room its name.

The main hall’s sound has repeatedly shaped its history. A 1967 fire led to a concrete replacement stage, new seating and carpeting; later restorations, running from the 1990s to 2017, restored a wooden parquet floor, revised the stage and improved sound isolation. On 18 January 2021, a roof fire and the water used to extinguish it damaged the hall and its organ. The room returned to use within roughly 100 days, followed by interior repair work in summer 2023.

The room today

BOZAR programs classical concerts alongside jazz, electronic, global, pop, rock and contemporary projects, treating music as one strand of a wider arts-house calendar. In the Henry Le Bœuf Hall, scarlet velvet seating, parquet flooring, bare white colonnades and occasional gilding give the room a ceremonial visual frame. Café Victor serves coffee, wine and food before, during and after performances, useful for a pre-show pause inside the building.
