KAAITHEATER

KAAITHEATER is Brussels’s 740-seat performing-arts house, built into the former Lunatheater on Sainctelettesquare. Its defining feature in August 2026 is mobility: the permanent auditorium remains under renovation, while Kaaitheater presents work across partner venues around the city. A return to the rebuilt headquarters is planned for September 2027, making every current listing a venue-specific experience instead of a night in one fixed room.

A festival finds its permanent stage

Kaaitheater began with the first Kaaitheater Festival in 1977, conceived by programme director Hugo De Greef as a meeting point for adventurous theatre. The organisation operated seasonally and nomadically across Brussels from 1987, then moved into the Lunatheater in June 1993. That building had been constructed between 1929 and 1932 on the former Luna Park site, and its main hall later became Kaaitheater’s long-term base; the Lunatheater name changed to Kaaitheater in 2001. The 1993 move also briefly joined Kaaitheater with Ancienne Belgique, which shared the building during its own renovation until 1996. In 2022, Kaaitheater left Sainctelettesquare for a major transformation. Delays shifted the reopening target to September 2027, extending the house’s latest nomadic chapter.

What the ticket leads to today

Kaaitheater’s programming policy centres dance, theatre, performance and conversations, with music and musical performance appearing inside that wider live-arts frame. It works with Belgian and international choreographers, performers and newer artists, so a concert-style listing can arrive as part of a hybrid bill. During the final nomadic season, the programme uses De Kriekelaar, Kaaistudios and partner halls across Brussels. Seating, sightlines, sound and bar service therefore depend on the host named on each event page. The rebuilt base is planned around a renovated large auditorium and a second room of roughly 180–200 seats.
