Jazz Station

Jazz Station in Brussels is a 120-person room built into the former Chaussée de Louvain railway station, a Flemish neo-Renaissance bridge station whose building sits above the Brussels–Namur–Luxembourg tracks. That elevated railway setting gives a concert night a clear physical frame: trains pass beneath a red-brick cultural house devoted to listening, exhibitions and jazz performance. Capacity stays small enough for close contact with the band, while the building’s railway past remains present throughout the visit.

A railway building’s second life

Opened in 1885, the Chaussée de Louvain station was planned as a bridge structure: its wings held the stationmaster’s rooms, ticket and telegraph offices, waiting rooms and a covered footbridge to open-air platforms. Brussels tram growth diminished the stop’s role and it closed in 1924; the property later became protected heritage in 1996. In 2002, Belgian Rail granted Saint-Josse-ten-Noode a 66-year emphyteutic lease, enabling a municipal restoration supported by European, Brussels regional and heritage bodies. The converted Jazz Station was inaugurated on September 30, 2005, an initiative associated with then-mayor and jazz drummer Jean Demannez. Its opening created a permanent jazz venue in a building that had spent decades away from passenger service.

The listening room now

The curatorial policy gives space to emerging talent and links jazz with dance, visual art, performance and spoken word. Programming favors jazz in its breadth—Belgian players, international groups, contemporary improvisation, big-band projects, album launches, singer nights and family concerts—with Les Lundis d’Hortense holding regular Wednesday slots. Expect a concentrated, concert-hall listening culture instead of bar chatter; the association runs the bar, and rental rules protect a moderate-volume environment. A multimedia room carries the performance on a large screen for a separate, relaxed viewing area.
