Forest National

Forest National is Brussels’s 8,400-capacity concert arena, created for the scale that the city’s existing rooms had outgrown in 1970. Its defining trait is an oval, amphitheatre-style room that frames arena-sized productions with seated sightlines and a closer visual feel than a long bowl. The same configuration can contract for 3,000-to-4,000-person concerts, while a former backstage wall covered in artists’ messages now forms part of a public foyer.

A dance opening, a recorded night

Forest National opened on October 8, 1970, when Maurice Béjart’s Ballet of the 20th Century performed the Ninth Symphony. The first configuration seated 5,500, and its purpose was direct: Brussels needed a larger stage than Cirque Royal, Ancienne Belgique, Palais des Beaux-Arts and several smaller halls could provide. A 1995 renovation refashioned the façade and foyer, added a balcony, installed adjustable staging and modernised light and sound, raising capacity to 8,400.

A later operational change reshaped the audience experience while Music Hall kept ownership. Be•at assumed day-to-day operation on October 1, 2013; 2014 works numbered every seat and added two foyers. On November 9, 2017, The National played Boxer in full here. That performance became Boxer (Live in Brussels), released first for Record Store Day in 2018 and later on CD and digital formats: a full-album concert preserved as a commercial live record.

The room in practice

Today’s programme brings pop, hip-hop, R&B, Latin, metal, alternative, rock and classical bills into a hall that also books ballet, musicals, opera, sport and family productions. The oval plan and amphitheatre effect make the balcony an integral viewing tier, while the adjustable stage adapts the room’s scale. Numbered seats, improved circulation and two foyers ease arrival and interval traffic; one foyer retains the roadies’ and artists’ backstage-message wall.
