About Beursschouwburg

Beursschouwburg is a 178-capacity concert room within a four-auditorium arts house in central Brussels. Its distinguishing feature is the collision of scales: a compact gig hall sits beside a 134-seat theatre, 30-seat cinema and café built for 250. Music arrives as part of a wider programme of performance, film, visual art, talks and parties, making this a strong pick for listeners drawn to discovery and mixed-format evenings.

A theatre shaped by its building

The story begins in 1885, when the site opened as the Brasserie Flamande, a complex with café, billiard room, banqueting hall and garden. Its main hall became the Théâtre de la Bourse in 1946, then took the Beursschouwburg name in 1965. The new institution began as a second Flemish theatre for Brussels, providing a stage for Flemish artists in the capital. During the 1970s, it widened its offer beyond theatre to visual art and concerts by international artists. That shift established the multidisciplinary character concertgoers encounter today.

A major fight over the building supplied a defining later chapter. In 1989, plans approved for architect Vink’s conversion prompted resistance; a neighbourhood committee publicly opposed the scheme in October 1991, arguing for the historic layers behind the façade. The proposal was shelved in 1994, and a 1997 architectural competition followed. The result was a venue whose old fabric and adaptable cultural role remain closely linked.

The room today

Booking favors experimentation, emerging talent, artist development, collectives and artistic research. Expect rock, metal, electronic, folk, jazz, alternative, indie and pop alongside performance-led bills and cross-disciplinary events. For a straight concert night, the 178-person hall promises an intimate scale; the broader building adds a 250-capacity café, theatre, cinema and exhibition areas. The café also hosts talks, debates and occasional performance activity, so arrive ready for a house with several things happening at once.
