About Art Base

Art Base is a roughly 80-seat seated concert room and exhibition space in central Brussels. Its defining feature is proximity: the venue describes a configuration that brings players and listeners close together, while its Rue des Sables home faces the Comic Strip Museum. Expect the scale of a small listening room, with a calendar that travels among musical cultures instead of settling into one scene.

A 2006 room for close listening

Art Base’s company was established on January 6, 2006. Frans De Clercq, named as founder on the venue’s team page, told Belgian music magazine Larsen that he opened the place with a friend; JazzMania likewise dates the club’s creation to 2006. Public listings present the result as a multifunction art centre: concerts sit alongside exhibitions, dance and poetry events, placing the room’s identity in a cross-disciplinary programme from the outset.

That founding premise still frames the experience. JazzMania’s 2022 profile records a club philosophy in which audience and musicians form a closely arranged shared gathering, while the venue’s own 2026 listings show that intimacy applied to jazz manouche, Indian classical music, bossa nova, Balkan music and tango. Art Base has built its character through that small-room exchange: performers arrive with detailed regional traditions or original work, and the audience hears them at close range.

The current room

Art Base’s stated programming preference leans toward traditional music and original creations, with space for emerging musicians alongside established players. World music provides the dominant thread, especially Mediterranean, Balkan, gypsy and Latin forms, joined by jazz and classical recitals. The practical picture is straightforward: approximately 80 seated places, a compact audience-performer layout, plus a bar with a self-service buffet and mezze. This suits attentive concerts, acoustic detail and programmes built around musicianship.
