Lotto Arena

Lotto Arena is Antwerp’s 8,050-capacity concert arena, positioned beside the much larger AFAS Dome. Its defining feature is scale with flexibility: a standing central floor takes the room to its concert maximum, while the seating configuration serves sports crowds of up to 5,218. Connected to its neighbouring arena and Hospitality Center, it gives touring productions a substantial indoor room without the dimensions of the adjacent main hall.

Built to fill Antwerp’s middle ground

The arena opened on March 10, 2007, following a public-private partnership between the City of Antwerp and the Sportpaleis management, now be•at. The project cost €13 million, with city, Flemish and European public funding contributing €6 million; it completed a broader redevelopment of the Sportpaleis site that had already added a renovated main arena, new entrance building and Hospitality Center. Belgium’s National Lottery signed on as naming sponsor for an initial 10-year term.

Its opening night framed the room as a concert-and-events venue from the start. Around 4,000 young attendees saw My First Night, a junior edition of Night of the Proms, with Gene Thomas, Belle Perez, Chico & the Gypsies, John Miles and the Novecento orchestra under Robert Groslot. Billboard reported that construction crews were still working two days before the March 10 launch, a brisk finish to a hall designed to cover the gap between theatres and Antwerp’s largest arena.

The room today

Lotto Arena’s programming is broad by design: concerts share the calendar with basketball, family shows, esports and other large indoor events. Rock, metal, electronic music, pop, R&B, folk, country and alternative acts all fit its concert profile. For music, the crucial physical detail is the standing middle floor; for sport, staff slide a mobile playing surface across the concrete base. That convertible layout makes the venue especially suited to arena-scale productions that benefit from a closer, more contained audience field.
