About AMUZ
AMUZ is Antwerp’s 391-seat concert hall inside the former St Augustine’s Church, a 17th-century Baroque room reshaped for contemporary listening. Its capacity can reach 499 with a flexible stage, yet the standard layout keeps the scale close: 314 seats have optimum visibility, while 77 carry limited sightlines. The defining feature is the conversion itself: an active music room within a protected church whose doors first opened in 1618.
A church’s second opening
Augustinian Observants returned to Antwerp in 1607 and received the grounds of the De Ketel brewery. Their monastery church, designed and built under Wenzel Cobergher, rose between 1615 and 1618 at the edge of that complex. It served first as a monastery church, then as a parish church from 1803; its final religious service took place on May 14, 1973, before deconsecration and transfer to the city. [2,3]
A new future gathered momentum in 1996, when plans for a music centre became official after summer concerts showed the building’s potential. Extensive restoration and adaptation followed, and the church reopened as AMUZ in 2006. The work brought a public entrance on Kammenstraat, artist accommodation, acoustic isolation and climate control into the historic fabric. In 2018, Jan Fabre added three scarab-mosaic altarpieces during Antwerp Baroque. [3,4]
The room today
AMUZ programs classical music with a strong commitment to historically informed performance, ranging from medieval repertoire to new work; folk also appears on its wider bill. Expect a seated, focused concert experience in a three-aisled church interior, with the winter chapel repurposed as the foyer. A sloping approach links the modern entrance to that foyer, while the foyer counter incorporates the former communion rail and altar. Acoustic glazing, a recording studio behind the altar, and flexible staging support concerts and recordings alike.
