About Kavka Zappa

Kavka Zappa is a 1,000-capacity concert hall in Antwerp’s Kiel district, built around a youth-culture mission that puts young organisers on the production side as well as the audience side. Its 467-square-metre main room can be scaled to 500 people, a useful distinction for tours and promoters working beneath full-room size. Concerts share the building with club nights, festivals, showcases and community-led events, creating a bill that moves freely across scenes.

A school ballroom remade for the stage

The venue began life as Zappa, a youth competence centre created by Kavka vzw. A former school ballroom in Kiel was renovated into a concert and event space; young people took part in the renovation through work experience, training and competence-focused guidance. Zappa officially opened on April 29, 2009, alongside JCC Deurne, with Antwerp framing both centres around youth, education and employment development.

The conversion expanded a hall Kavka had already used for parties and lifted capacity to 1,000. In October 2018, Kavka brought its two sites under one shared name: the central-city location became Kavka Oudaan, while the Kiel building became Kavka Zappa. The change clarified a single organisation across two rooms while preserving Zappa’s event-centred identity.

A room shaped by its organisers

Programming at Kavka starts with an open organiser model: people with an event plan submit an application, then discuss availability, conditions and a contract with the events team. That structure suits the venue’s broad spread of metal, electronic, rock, alternative, indie, hip-hop, pop and folk. For concertgoers, the practical picture is an adaptable large room: 467 square metres, 1,000 at full capacity, or a 500-person configuration. Bar, front-of-house and technical work also feed Kavka’s volunteer-development pathway.
