The Vanguard

The Vanguard is a 200-capacity live-music venue in Newtown, Sydney, where performers play within a deliberately close room. Its distinguishing feature is flexibility: dinner-and-show seating, a mezzanine with banquettes and standing-floor configurations share the same stage, supported by a d&b audiotechnik sound system. That makes the experience feel tailored to the bill, from a singer-songwriter set with table service to a louder club-format night.

A venue with several second acts

The Vanguard opened in 2003 as a purpose-built live-music venue. Booker Geoff Trio later recalled helping open its doors and curating its music programme for the first six years, placing the room in Newtown’s live circuit from the start. Its clearest turning point came in 2016, when The Vanguard closed and the site returned as Leadbelly under Luke O’Donohoe and Zac Davis, with a blues, bluegrass, rockabilly and rock focus.

Leadbelly’s tenure proved brief. The room returned to the Vanguard name in 2018, then Beau Neilson took ownership in April 2024. After renovations beginning in August, it relaunched in October with a rebuilt bar and bathrooms, new décor, lighting, projector and a full d&b system; acoustic work included drapes, baffles and carpet. The result is a distinctly newer technical room inside a venue whose name carries two decades of local gig history.

How the room works now

The calendar ranges across jazz, rock, indie, electronic music, burlesque, comedy and DJs, and the venue invites performance proposals directly from artists. Buyers can choose by format: dinner-and-show tickets bring reserved seating and table service, while general-admission events clear space for a standing crowd. Sightlines extend from the floor to the mezzanine banquettes, and a rear accessible entrance plus an accessible main-floor bathroom support venue access. Food, cocktails and a full bar remain part of the show-night setup.
