About Enmore Theatre

Enmore Theatre in Sydney’s Inner West is a 2,500-capacity concert room whose 1930s Art Deco auditorium still frames contemporary shows. Its concert configuration puts 1,785 people on the dance floor, with lounge, balcony and circle seating above and behind it, giving tours a large standing crowd alongside a theatre-scale viewing option. That combination, plus a surviving original-condition Art Deco interior, makes the room suited to both big hooks and close-looking audiences.

A cinema’s second act

Built in 1908 and opened to the public in 1912 as a photo-play theatre, the Enmore was run in its early years by the Szarka brothers. Hoyts’ 1936 rebuild reshaped it as the Art Deco theatre visible today, with a renewed stage and expanded flying capacity. The building’s fabric combines Art Nouveau, Edwardian, Art Moderne and Art Deco elements, a record of the successive remodellings beneath its familiar façade.

A later switch in purpose forms the sharpest turn in its story. The Louis Film Company bought the building in 1969, renamed it the Finos Theatre and programmed Greek-language films for the local Greek community. Falling cinema audiences led to closure; a refit returned the Enmore name and reopened it for live music and theatre in 1985. In 2003, the Rolling Stones chose it for an Australian appearance, with ticketless listeners gathering outside on Enmore Road.

The room in concert mode

The Enmore books a broad performance mix: live music across rock, alternative, pop, electronic, jazz, R&B, metal and classical-adjacent bills, alongside comedy, theatre and cultural events. It operates as an all-ages venue, with age-specific areas for some events. For a standing gig, the dance floor is the main action; seated shows use stalls, lounge, circle and balcony positions. Three licensed cashless bars sell drinks, snacks and confectionery. Recent auditorium works re-racked the balcony and dress circle for cleaner sightlines, while the upper SLounge and dress circle are reached by stairs.
