About Metro Theatre
Metro Theatre is a Sydney CBD live-music venue whose main room is specified for 1,200 patrons. Open since 1994, it pairs that concert floor with Metro Social next door, a 350-capacity companion room. The distinguishing contrast comes before the first note: an Art Deco-influenced foyer meets a venue identity shaped by grunge-era club culture, then opens into spaces built for both touring bills and smaller developing acts.
A rescue and a 1995 marker
The Metro opened in 1994 as an independent live-music venue. Its hardest documented turning point came in 2006, when voluntary administration left promoters and artists among its creditors; Century Venues took over daily operations after the locks changed. Century’s own later submission describes the company as having saved and turned around the Metro business in 2005, placing the rescue in the mid-2000s transition that kept the room in live entertainment.
A defining early concert arrived on 28 August 1995, when Jeff Buckley played the Metro on his Australian tour. That date gives the room a tangible place in the short touring life behind Grace, while the later operational rescue explains why the venue remained available for the next generation of Sydney and visiting artists.
The two-room present
Century presents the Metro as a breakthrough venue for local and international acts, and the program ranges across indie and rock, metal, pop, electronic music and hip-hop. The main room’s production specification places delay speakers at the rear, a useful detail for sound coverage beyond the front of the floor. Metro Social supplies the smaller-format option, while the foyer’s Art Deco influence, Main Bar and cloakroom make the arrival and interval experience feel purpose-built for a long night of live music.
