About The Lansdowne

The Lansdowne is a Chippendale, Sydney pub and concert venue licensed for 400 people across two floors: 200 downstairs, plus 200 upstairs including the rooftop. Its defining practical feature is the split-level setup. The ground floor operates as pub space, while Level One operates as a live-music room for local and touring bands about four nights a week. It is a flexible format for a small show: drinks and food downstairs, then a dedicated room upstairs.

A pub rebuilt twice

The Lansdowne began as a public hotel at the Broadway–City Road corner in 1933. In August 2015, after about 90 years in trade, it closed; the building then spent 18 months dormant. Jake Smyth and Kenny Graham, from Mary’s and the Unicorn Hotel, announced the venue’s June 2017 return with Matt and Dan Rule. Their conversion committed the entire top floor to live music, moved the former performance focus upstairs, and added premium acoustics.

In February 2022, the operators said their lease would end after the landlord planned to turn the gig room into extra hostel accommodation. The pub reopened in March 2023 under the Oxford Art Factory team, restoring a music program and adding a rooftop. That sequence explains the room’s current shape: a working pub with a separate upstairs performance space, created through repeated reinvention of the same corner building.

The room today

Bookings are open to artist, event and support-slot enquiries, while the current program spans alternative, rock, indie, pop, electronic, folk and hip-hop. Expect a pub-first arrival downstairs; the bandroom and rooftop sit upstairs, reached by stairs. Ground-floor wheelchair access is available, with stair-only access to both upper spaces. The rooftop serves as a pre-show perch, while the first-floor bandroom contains the main ticketed-room experience.
