About Petersham Bowling Club

Petersham Bowling Club is a 200-capacity room in Sydney’s Inner West where a lawn-bowls club shares its bill with loud local bands. Its defining piece of stagecraft is literal: one band room occupies the former poker-machine area. That 2007 change helps explain the mix of gigs, family afternoons and bowls happening around a clubhouse and greens built for community use.

The vote that changed the stage

Founded in 1896 as the Petersham Bowling & Recreation Club, the PBC spent its early life focused on bowling. Financial decline brought a 2004 proposal to demolish the clubhouse and top green for 17 townhouses, followed in 2006 by a plan to lease part of the grounds for a childcare centre for 99 years. Local members defeated both development paths; after the childcare vote, the incumbent board resigned en masse and community members became directors in October 2006. The following year, the new board removed the poker machines and turned their former space into a stage. Volunteers ran the bar and venue through the early rescue period, building a live-music program around a club retained as public green space.

Two rooms, lawn-side breathing space

The PBC books live music up to five nights each week across upstairs and downstairs stages, with a clear emerging-to-established-artist policy. Artists keep their ticket, merchandise and door revenue, and booking submissions go to the club’s live-music booker by email. Expect bills spanning indie, alternative rock, country, folk, metal and electronic music. For concertgoers, the useful physical contrast is indoor band rooms alongside tables by the bowling green: a show can feel close and communal indoors, with space to regroup outside between sets.
