About Manning Bar

Manning Bar is the University of Sydney Union-run live room in Camperdown, Sydney, with a 950-person main concert capacity. Its clearest draw is scale with flexibility: Level 2 of Manning House combines the main room with a rooftop balcony and two smaller rooms, while courtyard and multi-stage configurations can expand an event’s footprint. The campus setting brings student competitions and parties into the same program as touring rock, metal, indie, electronic, R&B, Latin and folk bills.

A bar rebuilt for the gig

USU opened Manning Bar in 1974 on Level 1 of Manning House. It moved to Level 2 in 1991; demolition of that section followed in 1998, and the present venue opened in 2000. That sequence explains a room whose history predates its present shell.

Its first known concert came on 4 August 1978, when Sydney group Flowers, later Icehouse, played. Paul Kelly followed in 1979 and INXS in 1980. A later pivot reshaped its role: reduced student demand and rising costs ended daytime bar trade in 2020, while live music and event bookings continued. Manning became an event-led room, carrying its campus history into concert nights.

The room now

Expect a standing, main-room show with a 950-person ceiling, plus balcony air and smaller side rooms available for private hire or pop-up bars. The venue takes event-booking enquiries and programs domestic and international acts alongside party nights and the University of Sydney Battle of the Bands. Its licence runs until 3am from Monday through Saturday, giving late club and electronic bills room to stretch beyond a standard early finish.
