Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre

The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, usually called The Joan, is Penrith’s multi-room performance venue in Sydney’s west. Its principal room, the Richard Bonynge Concert Hall, seats 550. The venue carries an unusually direct link to its namesake: Dame Joan Sutherland and her husband, conductor Richard Bonynge, performed at its 1990 opening, with that appearance recorded as her final recital. That history gives a concert here a genuine connection to Australian opera, even when the bill heads toward amplified music, comedy or contemporary performance.

A gala opening, then a larger home for performance

The Joan opened on 14 August 1990 as a Bicentennial Project, in a building designed by Australian architect Philip Cox. Its first configuration brought together the Penrith Conservatorium of Music, the Richard Bonynge Concert Hall and the Allan Mullins Studio. Opening night placed the venue’s name on the stage: Sutherland sang Arne’s “When Daisies Pied” and Tosti’s “Serenata,” accompanied by Bonynge; after encores, the audience gave the pair a standing ovation. Q Theatre’s archive identifies the occasion as Sutherland’s last recital. In October 2005, Q Theatre moved into an expansion that added its 378-seat theatre, extended Conservatorium facilities and a large atrium foyer. The result is a venue built around classical music that now works across several scales of performance.

The room today

The Joan presents classical and contemporary music alongside theatre, dance, comedy and community events, while its hire program welcomes touring concerts, musicals, drama, workshops and festivals. For music audiences, the Richard Bonynge Concert Hall is the key room: raked stalls and gallery seating, stepped aisles, a hardwood stage, and a naturally live acoustic profile designed for clarity in unamplified performance. Reinforced sound supports amplified sets. The Malcolm Borland Foyer’s dedicated bar also serves the hall, useful for interval or pre-show drinks.
