About Gasoline Pony

Gasoline Pony is a 100-capacity live-music bar in Marrickville, Sydney, built for close-range sets and a drink between songs. Its defining feature is a spread of social spaces: an interior room, a front area, and a large rear courtyard with covered beer-garden seating. That layout gives a small-capacity show an easy before-and-after flow, while keeping the act at the centre.

A Paint Shop, Then a Stage

Gasoline Pony opened in 2014, transforming a former paint shop on Marrickville Road into a small bar with live music. Sister-and-brother team Fiona Cook and Elmo Reed owned and operated the venue during its early years, linking its hospitality side directly to working musicians. In the Inner West Live Music and Performance Census of 2019, Gasoline Pony appeared with Lazybones Lounge and Butchers Brew as venues in the Marrickville/Dulwich Hill precinct presenting a great deal of music. The same period’s programming gives that finding a human scale: frequent bands sat alongside Cook’s twice-monthly Acca-Pony a cappella gathering, while an open-mic night was planned. The result was a bar shaped around repeat local participation, with singing sessions and emerging bills forming part of the main offer.

The Room and the Roster

Local artists and community-led activity sit at the heart of Gasoline Pony’s booking approach: management has described an emphasis on local musicians, performer payment, open mic, youth-music sessions, a community choir and a sea-shanty club. The program moves across alt-folk, blues and New Orleans stomp, with rock, R&B, indie, country, pop and electronic bills also in the mix. Inside, expect the close quarters of a 100-person bar; outside, the courtyard and covered beer garden offer room to reset between sets. Disabled access is available.
