Factory Theatre

Factory Theatre is a six-room live-entertainment complex in Marrickville, Sydney, with a Main Room that holds up to 800 standing. Its practical distinction is scale with subdivision: the converted-factory site also includes 150-capacity Fusebox and Factory Floor rooms, alongside 50–70 capacity spaces. That range lets one address serve crowded band shows, small-format comedy and cabaret, and multi-room festival bills.

A venue built through conversion and compliance

Century Venues’ account places Factory Theatre’s opening in 2007, when it transferred the @Newtown live-performance program after that venue’s owner pursued a table-poker conversion. The building brings its industrial setting into the pitch: Sydney Comedy Festival describes a reconfigured factory in Marrickville’s warehouse district. The most revealing early chapter involved approvals. Century told a NSW parliamentary inquiry that a change from restaurant to theatre liquor licensing triggered a place-of-assembly recategorisation; it reported an added $250,000 cost and 18 months operating amid approval pressures. Century also says it fitted three incubator music spaces and two container venues on the complex, shaping the site into its present multi-room operation.

A broad brief, with room to choose your scale

Factory’s booking brief reaches across alternative and indie, rock, pop, electronic, country, folk and metal, while also making space for comedy, theatre, film, dance and cabaret. The venue frames that mix around emerging performers as well as international rock concerts. In the Main Room, the production plan lists an 8m-wide level timber stage, an 18.4m-wide floor and a sound-and-light mix position 16m from the stage front. Sydney Comedy Festival lists wheelchair access for patrons in that room, with steps leading to the stage. Pick the room as carefully as the artist: the complex’s smaller spaces promise a closer audience-performer exchange.
