Dead Set

Dead Set is a Darlinghurst live-music bar beneath Kinselas Hotel, with room for up to 120 guests. Its draw is literal underground proximity: a basement room reached via Little Oxford Street, where hard-rock bills, late DJs and a dim, graffitied fit-out create a close-range setting for bands. The room opened in January 2026, making it a fresh addition to Sydney’s small-venue circuit with a deliberately heavy guitar focus.

A funeral parlour basement gets loud

The building supplies the story. Charles Kinsela Pty Ltd constructed its funeral parlour, chapels, offices and residence here in 1932–33; the family firm itself dated to 1830. After the undertaking business entered voluntary administration amid internal disputes in 1981, the site had become a brasserie and theatre by 1982. Dead Set opened beneath Kinselas on January 30, 2026, converting part of that funeral-chapel history into a live room. Its launch weekend, January 30–31, placed DownGirl and Liquid Zoo on the program alongside late-night DJs. The name plays on live sets and the building’s earlier life, while the venue’s present purpose stays firmly with amplified music and after-dark crowds.

Loud, close-up, late

Programming centres on hard rock and its adjoining lanes: punk, metal, doom, alternative and indie, with local artists, touring acts, afterparties and occasional showcase nights. Live bands anchor Fridays and Saturdays; DJs carry the room later, while Thursday programming includes emo-themed variety entertainment and Sundays can host special events. Expect deep-red light, graffiti-covered walls, arcade machines, beer on tap and frozen margaritas, plus a compact standing-room feel that favours proximity to the stage. Dead Set trades polished concert-hall comfort for volume, immediacy and a 5pm-to-late schedule running Thursday through Sunday.
