About Coliseum Theatre

Coliseum Theatre in Rooty Hill, Sydney, is a 2,200-capacity concert venue inside West HQ, with 1,956 seats in theatre mode. Its distinguishing trick is an auditorium that changes shape: European-designed retractable stalls shift between seated, concert, banquet and smaller screened arrangements. For live-music audiences, that means a full-scale touring production can use the same room that also hosts a close-set performance.

A purpose-built opening chapter

The venue was conceived as a purpose-built theatre within West HQ, with Rooty Hill RSL financing the $100 million development and COX Architecture handling its design. It opened to the public on 12 December 2019 after a build lasting just over two years. The building paired a 2,000-seat proscenium-arch auditorium and fly tower with three foyers, placing traditional theatre infrastructure inside a venue designed to shift formats.

Its first public performance, Christmas at the Coliseum, paired David Campbell with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra on 12 December 2019. Nine days later, the official gala centred on Keith Urban and Friends; Amy Shark and John Butler also featured in the opening-event run. Those dates established the room’s intended range: orchestral programming, theatre-scale staging and major Australian pop bills all sharing one adaptable stage.

A room built to change shape

The theatre accepts ticketed musicals, dramatic theatre, concerts, comedy, contemporary dance, symphony, ballet and cabaret, while its current music calendar reaches pop, R&B, folk, country and classical audiences. Concert mode reaches 2,200; theatre mode holds 1,956. An 80-line fly system and L-Acoustics L-ISA immersive sound support large productions, while the screening system can shape 900- or 1,300-person rooms. Three foyers and seven bars give pre-show traffic plenty of space beyond the auditorium doors.
