About Club 77
Club 77 is a 180-capacity nightclub in Sydney’s Darlinghurst, built around a single downstairs room reached from William Street. Its defining feature is scale: the dance floor, DJ booth and bar sit inside one compact, subterranean space, giving parties a close-range feel even when the programming moves between house, techno, bass and left-field club sounds. The 2026 redesign adds a wheelchair lift, accessible bar and facilities, plus haptic vests for Deaf and hard-of-hearing patrons.
Three lives beneath William Street
The address housed Club Kooky by 1995, when Sydney electronic duo B(if)tek filmed the video for “We Think You’re Dishy” there; Club 77 itself opened in 1997. Early Friday regulars included Phil Smart and Sugar Ray’s Jus Right, which evolved into the house-and-breaks night Tweekin’ and ran until April 2001. In the 2000s, Bang Gang held Fridays while Starfvckers claimed Saturdays from 2006 to November 2013, placing indie-dance and electro at the centre of the room’s busiest period.
After a closure, the site reopened in 2016 as a neighbourhood speakeasy called Sevs. Dane Gorrel and Timothy Poulton brought its club format back in 2018. A further closure began on April 13, 2026 for an accessibility rebuild; Club 77 relaunched on July 30 with Rydeen and SOVBLKPSSY, marking a new chapter for a room whose history is bound to reinvention.
The room after the rebuild
Expect a promoter-led calendar centred on local crews, resident DJs and grassroots scenes, with underground house, techno, bass and eclectic dance music as the core offer. Fridays can give visiting collectives room to shape a night; Saturdays lean on residents and seasoned selectors. The open-plan, single-room layout supports up to 180 guests, with a professional sound system and industry-standard DJ booth. The rebuilt booth retracts to create a live-performance stage, while the lowered bar and 1.5-metre circulation clearances broaden access across the floor.
