Church St Studios is a 60-seat live room in Camperdown, Sydney, with an unusually direct connection to the work made around it: the venue sits inside Australia’s largest autonomous collective of independent music, sound and screen professionals. More than 20 permanent studios share the building with the concert space, making this a compact room for audiences who value close listening and a genuinely music-making environment.

A studio collective becomes a stage

Church St Studios dates to 2014, when the older Church Street building became home to a collective of composers, producers, sound designers and recording professionals. Film and television composer Guy Gross founded the operation and remains its creative director, placing the live room within a broader screen-music and audio-production community. The venue’s identity comes from that purpose-built professional ecosystem: personal composing suites sit alongside larger recording rooms, while concerts occupy a 60-seat performance space.

A useful prelude appears in 2013, when sound designer and mix engineer John Hresc opened Sydney Sound Brewery, his post-production facility. It now operates within the Church Street complex. Together, those 2013 and 2014 milestones show a venue that grew from working audio rooms into a public performance program, with its studio residents still forming the core of the address.

The room today

Public concerts run chiefly on weekends, and venue-hire enquiries are handled directly by the studios. Sydney Fringe describes the room as 60-seat, pin-drop quiet and alcohol-free, with a deep-listening focus. The calendar leans strongly toward jazz, contemporary classical, folk-rooted songwriting, experimental work and indie-pop adjacent projects; recent listings include quartets, trios, theatrical song cycles and album launches. Expect seated listening, plus 22 wide stair treads with handrails and a halfway landing on entry.
