Camelot Lounge

Camelot Lounge is a 160-capacity live-music venue in Marrickville, Sydney, built around a two-room, two-stage setup: Camelot upstairs and the smaller Django Bar below. Its concrete calling card is a deliberately theatrical house style—camel-filled décor, a baby grand piano at the main stage, and bills that can place a songwriter, a world-music ensemble or a dance-ready party on the same calendar. The compact scale keeps performers close while the second room gives a night two distinct settings.

After Qirkz, a room with its own language

Camelot was already part of Marrickville’s live circuit by August 2011, when City Hub described it as rising from the ashes of nearby predecessor Qirkz. The venue was founded by Yaron Hallis, lead singer of Monsieur Camembert; a 2020 interview identified Hallis as Camelot’s owner and described the multi-level operation as a home for regular, stylistically varied performances alongside the Camel Art Club’s life-drawing-and-live-music sessions. The result is a place shaped by a working musician’s programming instincts, with visual clutter and informal seating built into the proposition.

A 2022 review of Monsieur Camembert at Camelot offers a useful picture of the room in action: Hallis’s band expanded its lineup to use the grand piano and full drum kit, while listeners swayed in seats and danced in the tight aisles. That account captures the venue’s strongest trait for concertgoers: shows can feel like a lounge-room gathering even when the band arrives with a full, rhythm-forward arrangement.

What the rooms ask of a crowd

Camelot’s in-house curation centres singer-songwriters, world music, jazz, folk, blues, cabaret, comedy and related cross-genre bills; its wider calendar also makes room for funk, soul, country, Latin and party tributes. Upstairs is the main performance space, marked by the baby grand; downstairs, Django Bar concentrates the lounge-room feel on a smaller scale. Expect a mix of seating and standing, plus space to dance where the crowd permits. The venue also accepts private-function bookings, a clue to its flexible, cabaret-friendly layout.
