Viejas Arena

Viejas Arena is San Diego State University’s 13,500-capacity concert configuration, an on-campus room built into a canyon hillside at the former Aztec Bowl. Its signature feature is an open-air concourse: concertgoers can step outside during a set break while remaining inside the arena footprint. Original concrete bleachers and cobblestone walls from the bowl still frame the north entrance, giving this modern sports venue a clear link to the campus site that came before it.

A bowl becomes an arena

The building opened in 1997 as Cox Arena on the site of Aztec Bowl, the 1936 stadium that hosted San Diego State football through 1967. The new arena enclosed one end of the old horseshoe, preserving sections of its concrete seating and masonry at the entrance. Cox Arena’s first popular-music concert arrived on December 12, 1997, when Aerosmith played with Stone Temple Pilots and Talk Show; the show gave the new room an early full-scale rock statement.

A second defining change came on March 17, 2009, when SDSU and the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians announced a 10-year naming-rights agreement. The arena adopted the Viejas name on July 1, 2009, connecting the campus venue with a tribal enterprise that already worked in concert booking and event production.

The room now

Viejas books touring concerts alongside SDSU functions, cultural events and other special programming. Its concert calendar favors pop, hip-hop, rock and metal bills, with the arena able to scale from 3,000 seats to 13,500 depending on the setup. The steep, floor-close sports-arena geometry keeps much of the audience near the action, while the open-air concourse creates an unusual reset point between songs or sets. Expect an arena presentation with a campus-event rhythm, plus a little Southern California air in the circulation spaces.
