About House of Blues San Diego
House of Blues San Diego is a 1,500-capacity downtown room inside the former Gaslamp Woolworth building. Its most distinctive detail is the Bead Wall, covered in Mardi Gras beads, alongside the House of Blues tradition of a metal box of Mississippi Delta mud beneath the stage. The result is a concert hall framed by folk art and Southern-Delta décor, with the scale for national touring acts and the close quarters of a general-admission club.
A Woolworth building, then opening night
In 2005, the House of Blues chain opened its San Diego outpost in the former Gaslamp Woolworth building. The launch gave the old retail site a music hall, restaurant, bar, and a full production installation designed for amplified live shows. The Wailers played the opening night in 2005, drawing a capacity crowd; an early trade report identified the room’s concert system as an EV, Midas, and Klark Teknik setup. That first bill established the venue’s broad musical lane: reggae on opening night, followed quickly by bookings including George Clinton, Ozomatli, John Butler Trio, and Audioslave on the May 2005 calendar.
The room today
Concerts are generally admission-floor affairs, with reserved VIP seating available in the balcony and opera boxes. The current programming lane spans alternative, rock, jazz, pop, indie, hip-hop, Latin, and metal. In the main Music Hall, a large stage faces a dance floor, while the upper level supplies suite boxes, premium seating, and elevated views. The building also contains the smaller Voodoo Room, the Delta Room, a restaurant and bar, plus bars distributed through the venue—useful for shows with a long night ahead.
