About Union Transfer
Union Transfer is a 1,200-capacity Philadelphia concert hall in a converted 1889 market and rail-luggage building, a past still signaled by the Spring Garden Farmer’s Market lettering outside. Its draw for a prospective ticket-holder is mid-size scale with a freight-house footprint: a room whose movable stage, mezzanine and raised viewing areas shape the experience alongside the bill.
A Building With Several Acts
The building began in 1889 as the Spring Garden Farmers Market. Between 1918 and 1942 it housed Union Transfer Baggage Express Co., a Reading Railroad luggage depot; later tenants included a tire shop, trust company and Spaghetti Warehouse restaurant. During the 1980s, it also operated as the roller rink and rap club After Midnight, where LL Cool J performed.
Spaghetti Warehouse closed in late 2010. R5 Productions and Bowery Presents redeveloped the space, with Four Corners Management partners involved in the initial venture, and Union Transfer opened on September 21, 2011. R5 founder Sean Agnew described a renovation that stripped the interior and started again. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah headlined the opening night before a sold-out 1,000-person crowd; contemporary coverage found clear sightlines across the room’s full configuration.
The Floor Plan Now
R5’s programming model centers on touring acts with enough draw for a mid-size room, creating a broad calendar across indie and alternative rock, folk-rooted songwriting, hip-hop, R&B, electronic music and jazz. The venue welcomes all ages, while 21-plus guests have bar access. Visit Philadelphia lists three full bars, microbrews and vegan food. Use the floor for proximity, the mezzanine for elevation, and the raised 21-plus platform when a clear view matters most.
