The Soundstage at Ardmore Music Hall

The Soundstage at Ardmore Music Hall is the 600-capacity standing-room concert space in Ardmore, three miles outside Philadelphia on the Main Line. Its distinguishing feature is continuity: the same four walls have presented rock-club shows since 1980, first as 23 East Cabaret and later as Brownies 23 East. For a showgoer, that means a compact club format with a deep local lineage instead of an anonymous suburban events room.

Three eras at 23 East

23 East Cabaret opened in 1980 as a rock club and ran through 1994; Brownies 23 East followed from 1995 to 2012. In 2013, former Brownies owner Joe Rufo joined Point Entertainment’s Richard Kardon and booking agent Bryan Dilworth to convert the site into Ardmore Music Hall. Their plan brought sound upgrades, a relocated stage, a kitchen, and flexible seating for crowds ranging from 250 to 600. The new hall opened that September: the Holmes Brothers played the first night, while the Hooters filled the room’s 600-person capacity the following Saturday. Chris Perella has served as owner and head booker since 2014, giving the independently run room a direct line between its booking and operation.

The room today

Ardmore Music Hall remains independently owned, operated, and booked, with touring rock, funk, jam, roots, Americana, hip-hop, and pop-adjacent bills on its calendar. The room centers on an open dance floor beneath balcony and general-admission areas, with premium downstairs seating and four bars across two floors. A low stage keeps performers close to the floor; the sound system and show screens support a lively barroom presentation. It suits listeners who want to stand near the action, with elevated seating available for a wider view.
