About Dizzy's Club
Dizzy’s Club is a 140-seat room at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, built for close-up listening and set high above Columbus Circle with Central Park and Manhattan skyline views. Its distinguishing feature is that pairing of a small jazz-club scale with a purpose-designed performance space inside Frederick P. Rose Hall: bamboo-lined curves, clear sightlines, tables, bar seats, and a stage close enough for the musical conversation to carry across the room.
A club born on Dizzy’s birthday
The story begins with Jazz at Lincoln Center, which grew from a Lincoln Center summer concert series launched in 1987 and became an official Lincoln Center department in 1991. Under artistic director Wynton Marsalis, the organization engaged architect Rafael Viñoly and acoustic engineers for Frederick P. Rose Hall, a 100,000-square-foot home that opened in fall 2004 with Dizzy’s as one of its three performance spaces. The club opened on October 21, 2004, carrying the original name Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and honoring trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. Its first night gave pianist Bill Charlap, bassist Peter Washington, drummer Kenny Washington, trumpeter Nicholas Payton, and alto saxophonist Charles McPherson the bandstand; the engagement launched a three-week Dizzy Gillespie Festival. That opening establishes the room’s basic proposition: a formal Lincoln Center project shaped around the club-scale ensemble, late sets, food, and audience proximity associated with jazz listening.
The room today
Dizzy’s programs live jazz seven nights each week, making it a strong choice for small-group swing, modern jazz, vocal sets, and Latin-leaning jazz programs. Weeknight service centers on 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. sets, while Sundays shift earlier. Seating is first come within table or bar categories, and shared tables are part of the house style. The curved bamboo walls and skyline-facing windows give the room its visual character; the practical advantage for concertgoers is an intimate layout where every seat is intended to face the stage. Full-service dining runs alongside the music.
