The Django

The Django is a cellar-level live-music room at the Roxy Hotel on the SoHo–Tribeca border, configured for up to 150 people at reception. Its concrete distinction is the setting: a below-street jazz club modeled after Parisian boîtes, with vaulted ceilings, exposed brick, an open dining floor, two cocktail bars, and a Meyer Sound system. Expect a dinner-and-show format with the band at the center of an intimate, low-ceilinged room.

A hotel cellar becomes a jazz club

The Django opened in September 2015, when the newly renamed Roxy Hotel converted cellar event space from its Tribeca Grand era into an L-shaped jazz bar. Tribeca Citizen reported that Joseph Schwartz and Vito Dieterle, formerly of Murray Street’s Silver Lining jazz bar, helped operate the new room; its original layout placed the stage in the bend of the L, with bars at each end and curved banquettes beneath the vaults.

The venue’s strongest early chapter came from that conversion itself: a hotel basement designed for events became a dedicated late-night performance room as the property shifted from Tribeca Grand to Roxy in 2015. In November 2021, after the pandemic shutdown period, The Django restored the Mingus Big Band to a weekly New York stage. A review of the November 11 performance described a large crowd greeting the ensemble’s return, giving the room a documented post-reopening jazz milestone.

The room today

The Django books a nightly live-jazz program seven days a week, mixing emerging players with established bandleaders; jazz remains the central draw, with Latin and R&B-adjacent bills fitting the broader downtown palette. Reservations shape the experience, and the club invites band-booking inquiries by email. Tables sit in the open dining area facing the stage, while the two bars support a full cocktail-and-dinner operation. Arrive together and early: seating is first come, first served among reserved parties, so timing affects sightlines.
