Exit/In

Exit/In is a 500-capacity Nashville club on Elliston Place, operating as “Nashville’s Music Forum” since 1971. Its distinguishing feature is scale with history: a former listening room that grew into a rock-club-sized main room while remaining part of the Rock Block, the small strip of bars, venues and shops around Vanderbilt. The venue also carries official Nashville historic-landmark recognition.

A listening room, then a hard-fought handoff

Brugh Reynolds and Owsley Manier opened Exit/In in 1971 as a listening room. The founders’ first surprise audition came from a young Jimmy Buffett, and the club’s early bills also made space for bluegrass, jazz and comedy before its early-1980s expansion to 500 patrons established the room’s rock-club format. Steve Martin played frequent early shows there, part of a deliberately varied programme that placed comics alongside musicians.

Its recent history supplied a sharp ownership chapter. AJ Capital Partners bought the property in 2021, while Chris and Telisha Cobb continued operating the club through late 2022. Their lease’s end brought a closure after Thanksgiving; AJ Capital announced plans to renovate and reopen the room under new management, appointing Dan Merker as lead talent buyer in December 2022. Exit/In’s active calendar shows that the handoff led back to regular concerts.

The room today

Expect a mixed-genre, standing-room-forward concert calendar spanning hip-hop, electronic, R&B, country, metal, alternative, rock and indie. The main room supports flexible seated or standing setups, with a mezzanine that adds a raised viewing tier; two dressing rooms, a green room and an outdoor patio sit beyond the performance floor. For a showgoer, that points to a close-range club experience, with the upper level offering the clearest alternative to the floor crowd.
