About The Basement East

The Basement East is a roughly 500-capacity music venue in Nashville’s Five Points area, known locally as the Beast. Mike Grimes and Dave Brown created it as a larger step up from the original Basement, giving artists who had outgrown that smaller club a room with warehouse proportions and a back bar. Its clearest distinction comes from the building’s second life: a March 2020 tornado stripped away the roof and damaged its walls; the club rebuilt and returned a year later.

A room rebuilt in public

Grimes and Brown began looking for a larger East Nashville space in 2014 after acts associated with the original Basement had grown beyond its scale. They found a warehouse and opened The Basement East in April 2015, bringing a mid-sized standing room to Woodland Street. The building itself dated to 1974, with a modernist façade and distinctive arches.

Just after 1 a.m. on March 3, 2020, an EF3 tornado hit Five Points after a Bernie Sanders benefit had ended. Five staff members made it to the basement shortly before the roof blew off; the back and west walls collapsed, while the main floor and front façade remained salvageable. Reconstruction followed through the pandemic, and March 4–6, 2021 brought the first return audiences, initially in socially distanced formats.

The room today

Expect a standing, close-range club experience: the venue’s original concept centered on a 500-capacity warehouse room with a bar in back, while its current materials cite multiple bars and a Meyer Sound system. The booking lane is broad but music-first—indie and alternative rock, country and folk, hip-hop, pop, and electronic artists all fit its calendar—plus touring acts moving up from the original Basement’s smaller stage. The rebuilt sound system uses arrayed main loudspeakers with center and VIP fills, a useful detail for listeners who care about clear coverage across the floor.
