Wesley Anne

Wesley Anne is a 250-capacity live-music pub in Melbourne’s Northcote, housed in the bluestone-and-brick former Wesleyan chapel and school established in 1854. Its distinction lies in that unusually layered setting: a heritage building whose earliest room taught local children, later hosted civic business, and now carries gigs beside a high-ceilinged, candlelit main bar. The concert experience feels rooted in an old public building, with the band room and beer garden extending the evening beyond the stage.

A chapel, a council chamber, then a band room

The first structure on the site was completed in 1854 as a 22-foot-square Wesleyan Methodist chapel and school; it doubled in length the following year as enrolments grew. In 1870, the congregation shifted across High Street to its newly built church, leaving the earlier building to continue as a school and meeting place. One date captures its civic role: Northcote’s borough council held its inaugural meeting in the Wesleyan schoolroom on 26 July 1883, and the premises served as municipal chambers until Northcote Town Hall opened in 1889. Shops and commercial tenants followed through the twentieth century. Muller and Noel Fermanis opened Wesley Anne in 2003, aiming to create an accessible, intimate home for original bands in a part of Melbourne then viewed as suburban fringe. The venue name honors the Wesleyan founders whose schoolroom began the building’s public life.

The room today

Wesley Anne’s booking identity centers on intimate original music, especially singer-songwriters, while the current program reaches across folk, alternative, rock, classical, Latin, jazz, R&B and pop. Live music runs most nights. For a show, the adjoining band room supplies the focused listening space; the main bar brings soaring ceilings, stonework and a wrought-iron chandelier, while a rear beer garden offers a change of scene between sets. Tables, food, local beer, wine and cocktails support an unhurried night built around the performance.
