About Northcote Social Club
Northcote Social Club is a 350-capacity pub and bandroom in Melbourne’s Northcote, operating from a two-storey corner hotel rebuilt in 1894. Its distinguishing feature is the working-pub setup around the music room: decks, booths and dining spaces sit alongside a dedicated bandroom with its own bar and entrance. The venue’s production guide allows for 300 ticket holders plus up to 50 guests, making it a compact room for touring acts and local bills alike.
A corner hotel becomes a bandroom
The present building rose in 1894 after the earlier Shannon Hotel fell into disrepair and the council sold the site for demolition. It traded as the Commercial Hotel through much of the twentieth century, a period Darebin Libraries describes as largely unchanged in character. A change of hands in the early 2000s set up its cultural conversion: the Commercial became Northcote Social Club in 2004, with live bands as the central draw. A 2015 refurbishment refreshed the bars and bandroom while retaining the venue’s pub structure.
One recorded flashpoint arrived in 2007, when Pixies played a secret show in the room. Venue manager Andrew Mansfield later singled it out as an enormous occasion, a concise marker of the club’s ability to host intimate, one-off appearances alongside its regular program.
The room today
The calendar spans alternative, rock, folk, country, indie, pop, electronic and R&B, with booking enquiries handled through CG Live. For performers and promoters, the bandroom offers production support and flexible floor plans; for audiences, the useful details are its private bar, separate upstairs entrance and bathrooms. Beyond the room, the Upper Deck is covered and fitted with heating and fans, while the Lower Deck has a retractable roof and direct bar access. Full-venue hires and corporate activations also form part of the house policy.
