The Post Office Hotel

The Post Office Hotel in Coburg is an Art Deco pub with a concert capacity that remains publicly unlisted. Its distinguishing feature is the arrangement: bands play in the front bar, while an expansive beer garden and separate Dining Hall give a pub gig an unusually spread-out setting. The current program moves between singer-songwriters, indie and guitar bands, blues-rooted sets, R&B-tinged folk, and classic-rock cover shows, including afternoon and evening performances.

A 2010 reset, then room to grow

The venue’s present-day story starts in 2010, when Danial and Jane Caneva took over the Sydney Road Art Deco pub. A renovation restored its facade and interior details, while the new operators, working with Melbourne music identities, made live performance part of the house’s character. The front bar became the performance space, with a stage hosting local acts alongside the food-and-drink trade.

A second turn came in 2012. The adjoining space, formerly a nightclub, had been earmarked as a band room; growing demand for meals shifted the plan toward the Dining Hall instead. That decision left music in the compact pub bar and created a distinct second room for booths, communal tables and dining. In September 2024, the Victorian government announced a $10,000 Gigs Fund investment for paid performances by local and emerging artists at the hotel, with publican Daniel Caneva present.

The room today

Expect a front-bar show with close range to the performers, alongside the bustle of a working pub. The venue books primarily local artists, with occasional international visitors; Broadsheet identifies Thursday through Saturday evenings as regular music slots, while the current calendar also carries Sunday afternoon shows. The bill has room for original songwriting, folk, rock, blues and pop-minded acts, plus tribute bands. Outside, the beer garden includes a working barbecue; next door, the Dining Hall provides leather booths, a fireplace and recycled-timber tables for a quieter pre-show meal.
