About The Night Cat
The Night Cat is a 475-capacity Fitzroy, Melbourne room built for people who want the band in view wherever they land. Its performance area sits in the centre, with audiences circling it on all sides; the arrangement produces close-range sightlines across the floor instead of one distant focal point. Since opening in 1994, the club has made that in-the-round setup its defining practical feature.
A thirty-year fight for volume
Opened in 1994, The Night Cat began as a dedicated Fitzroy live-music club; Justin Stanford had taken ownership by 2017. Its early identity and present programming share a dance-floor pull: jazz, funk, soul, R&B, hip-hop, disco and Latin music. Sunday Domingo Latino became a fixed weekly session, giving the room a recurring social-dance centre amid its concert bills.
In April 2025, developer C&R Building sought an interim enforcement order through VCAT over claimed permit-breaching noise from the venue while planning a nearby project. The ruling put soundproofing, monitoring and acoustic costs squarely into the club’s immediate future. On August 27, 2025, VCAT cancelled the temporary orders after Stanford supplied an independent acoustic report showing compliance with the permit. The reversal let the venue continue under the same noise framework used for other music rooms.
The room, in practice
The present booking approach stays deliberately hybrid: local and international headliners, late Friday and Saturday sessions, and the Latin-focused Sunday program share a bill with jazz, funk, reggae, electronic sets and themed club nights. The central, in-the-round stage is the practical draw. There are no pillars blocking the view, and seating around the room creates options for focused listening or a dance-floor set. At this scale, the crowd becomes part of the show.
