About The Leadbeater Hotel

The Leadbeater Hotel in Richmond, Melbourne, is a 350-capacity standing bandroom tucked behind a corner pub, giving a night a clear split between front-bar catch-ups and a dedicated performance space. The room can also be set for 150 seated patrons. Upstairs, a 70-person area offers a 270-degree view across the performance zone, an unusually useful option for intimate shows and DJ sets.

A pub remade for bands

Before the Leadbeater, this Church and Victoria streets building housed the Hunchbax theatre restaurant and later operated as the Eureka Hotel. The Leadbeater began its live-music chapter in 2019. Owner Joe Downey, previously behind Nevermind Bar, reshaped the room around artists and shows: the stage grew, a green room went in, and a new sound system formed part of the conversion.

A sharp test arrived in June 2022, when the venue cancelled a show and closed early after its insurer rejected renewal. The Leadbeater secured cover after a public campaign, according to The Music, yet the replacement policy carried a reported 1,100 per cent premium increase. That episode puts its current, busy programming in context: keeping the bandroom active involved a direct fight to retain live music as part of the pub’s business.

How the room works now

The Leadbeater invites submissions from local and interstate artists alongside international touring acts, and its calendar stretches across rock, metal and hard rock, punk, emo, indie, pop and DJ bills. Expect a practical pub-to-gig flow: drinks and a pool table occupy the front-bar side, while the bandroom sits out back with its own performance focus. For smaller bills, the upstairs viewing area offers an alternate, house-party-scale setting.
