About The Last Chance Rock and Roll Bar

The Last Chance Rock & Roll Bar is a 200-capacity live-music pub in Melbourne’s North Melbourne precinct. Its defining feature is the all-night weekend licence: Friday and Saturday trading runs through to 7am, giving gig-goers a place to stay after the band room empties. The venue divides its action between a front bar and a separate performance space, making a show here feel like a pub night with a concentrated, close-range set at its centre.

A renamed public bar, kept alive through lockdown

The Last Chance began its current chapter in 2016, when Shane Hilton and Leanne took over an established North Melbourne public bar and gave it its current name. A tenth-anniversary series in 2026 framed that handover as the start of a live-music-focused operation built around the building’s late licence and band room. COVID-19 brought a sharp test in March 2020, when hospitality closures stopped gigs. Hilton and Leanne launched an online magazine, ran food delivery, and aimed to preserve the lease until live performance could resume. By December 2020, the venue had reopened bookings for 2021, offering bands a supplied front-of-house engineer for many three-act bills and shared backline. On 16 May 2026, Watty Thompson marked the anniversary with a 7am front-bar set, recalling an early morning when he became the first patron to stay through official close.

The room and the bills

The current calendar centres rock, punk, hardcore and metal, while also making room for hip-hop and alternative bills. Its documented booking ethos gives early-career local acts a route from rehearsal rooms toward regular stages, alongside established Australian names. Expect a compact standing environment: the venue has a modest main room, a small band room, kitchen and outdoor area; narrow doorways lead into the band room and bathrooms. That close layout suits loud, communal shows, while the front bar provides a separate space for food, drinks and post-set conversation.
