The Drunken Poet

The Drunken Poet is a 50-capacity live-music pub in West Melbourne, where a pint-and-song format keeps artists close to the crowd. Its defining fixture is the free Friday traditional Irish music session, running since 2006, alongside a six-night-a-week programme of local and interstate performers. Portraits of poets line the walls, giving the tiny room a literary frame that suits lyric-led sets, singalongs and musicians who work best without a buffer between stage and bar.

A Peel Street conversion with a songwriter’s memory

Siobhan Dooley founded The Drunken Poet in 2006 after finding a Goth bar opposite Queen Victoria Market and reshaping it as the kind of Irish local she knew from home. The choice of name carried through to the decor: Seamus Heaney, Leonard Cohen, Spencer P. Jones and local songwriter Van Walker were among the poet portraits reported on the walls in 2017. Folk became a natural centre of gravity, with Dooley describing a preference for lyric-heavy artists and original stories set to music.

The venue marked its 11th birthday in September 2017 with a bill including Mr Alford, the Twoks, Miss Whiskey, Moreland City Soul Review and Van Walker, a regular who had played every birthday celebration to that point. In the same 2017 profile, Dooley recalled a Tuesday tribute in which Liam Gerner played Bobby Charles songs with Lucky Oceans; additional musicians rose from the room through the night. That account captures the Poet’s useful scale: a scheduled set can turn into a shared session without leaving the bar behind.

The room today

The booking lane favours original local and interstate artists, with folk, roots, blues, singer-songwriter material and traditional Irish music forming the clearest through-line. Regular formats include Tuesday tribute sets, Wednesday’s Wine, Whiskey, Women showcase, open mic nights and Friday trad sessions; gigs carry free entry. For artists, the in-house setup is a Mackie ProFX12 feeding two Turbosound speakers, with four SM58 microphones. For listeners, expect a compact 50-person pub floor, Guinness and a broad Irish-whiskey selection in place of a separate concert hall.
