The Brunswick Artists Bar

The Brunswick Artists’ Bar is a 70-capacity standing room beneath Brunswick Ballroom in Melbourne’s Brunswick. Its scale is the draw: a built-in stage, bar and adaptable floor put performers and crowd in the same compact space, while the venue’s brick-and-tile construction gives amplified sets a naturally immediate edge. This is a downstairs room for close-up bills, DJ sets, poetry and low-key launches, with the kitchen operating until 9pm.

A downstairs chapter in a long-lived building

The bar arrived as part of the Brunswick Ballroom project, which opened in February 2021 after Andrew Kay’s team renovated the Sydney Road property. The wider building’s history reaches back to John Apostolakos, who acquired the shopfronts and the former Milliners factory above, then transformed the property into the Metropolis Ballroom during the 1980s. Greek wedding receptions, a French restaurant and the Spotted Mallard each occupied later chapters before the 2021 conversion. The Artists’ Bar was part of the launch-era plan: Beat reported a free Brunswick Music Festival show by Loretta and her Boyfriends downstairs on March 9, 2021. That detail captures the room’s intended role clearly: a smaller ground-floor counterpoint to the ballroom upstairs, with emerging and touring acts close to the audience.

The room on show night

BABS programs local and touring artists across electronic music, jazz, pop, folk, rock, R&B, country and indie, alongside spoken-word events and DJ-led nights. The venue provides a PA, microphone, sound technician, CDJs and backline, and asks artists to actively promote their dates, signalling a hands-on independent-room model. Expect a standing crowd around the compact stage and bar, with a flexible layout that can shift between a gig, dancefloor, industry gathering or creative launch. Its published 75-decibel limit suits controlled-volume sets, especially acoustic, jazz and lightly amplified shows.
