About Shotkickers

Shotkickers is a 200-capacity live-music bar and bandroom in Thornbury, Melbourne, built around close-range gigs: the space puts a standing audience directly before the stage, with booth seating along the sides and rear. Its name comes from a bar in The Simpsons, while the actual draw is practical: a deliberately sound-treated room where listeners can move toward the back for a quieter experience.

A High Street handover

Before Shotkickers, 744 High Street began its live-music life as Tago Mago in 2010, then operated as Swamplands Bar. Its predecessor established a local musical lineage, hosting Spencer P Jones, Kim Salmon and Hugo Race. In late 2021, musicians Christopher Windley and Mathias Northway took the available site and converted it into Shotkickers.

It opened in January 2022, after a rebuild that enlarged the stage, created a bandroom and installed booth seating; the renamed venue retained a 200-person capacity. The name nods to a fictional bar in The Simpsons, giving the project a specific origin while keeping the room focused on live music. In October 2024, Windley secured the lease on the adjacent property and began fundraising for a second space: Shotkickers itself would become the bandroom, while food and drink shifted to a new bar.

The room on show night

Shotkickers programmes emerging local acts alongside touring artists, taking gig enquiries through its music email. The bill crosses indie, pop, rock, alternative, metal, electronic, folk and country, with a stated openness to bands from across the musical spectrum. For concertgoers, the layout is simple: standing space at the stage, booths lining the side and rear walls, a bar and late kitchen service. A ramp entrance, accessible rear bathroom, gender-neutral bathrooms and a no-strobe lighting policy round out the room.
