George Lane

George Lane is a 120-capacity live-music venue in St Kilda, Melbourne, tucked into the ground floor of the historic George Hotel building. Its defining feature sits overhead: the former Crystal Ballroom, whose late-1970s and 1980s programme placed the building at the centre of Melbourne punk and rock culture. George Lane trades that vast historical shadow for a close-range room, where an audience of around 120 can gather around original local and touring performers.

Under the Ballroom

The building began as the Terminus Hotel in 1857, serving passengers at the St Kilda railway terminus opposite; it later became the George Hotel. During the late 1970s, its ballroom took on a new life as the Crystal Ballroom, with Dolores San Miguel among the promoters who shaped its early music programme. The room hosted bands including the Boys Next Door, Hunters & Collectors and INXS, giving the hotel a sharply different cultural role from its resort-hotel beginnings.

One date carries particular weight: The Birthday Party played its final Crystal Ballroom show on 9 June 1983. The hotel lost its licence and closed in 1987; new owner Donlevy Fitzpatrick restored and converted the property into apartments, bars, restaurants, an art gallery and cinema in 1991. George Lane now operates downstairs, continuing the building’s live-music use in a much smaller format.

The room now

George Lane’s booking focus is original local and touring music, especially blues, folk, Americana, country and rock ’n’ roll; its wider bills also reach indie, electronic, pop, alternative, jazz and R&B. The physical setup favours an intimate, standing-room energy: a 2.4-by-4.8-metre stage, in-house PA, six stage monitors and dedicated stage lighting. Polished concrete floors, dramatic curtains and warm bohemian detailing give the laneway room an after-dark atmosphere, while lower-level entry supports wheelchair access.
