About Evelyn Hotel

The Evelyn Hotel is a 350-capacity pub, bandroom and bottle shop on Melbourne’s Brunswick Street in Fitzroy. Its defining feature is the split personality: a street-facing public bar and beer garden sit beside a dedicated performance room, so a gig night can begin with a pool-table pint and end in a close-range standing crowd. The building itself dates to 1857, giving the room an unusually long physical history for a venue whose musical identity grew later.

A corner pub becomes a bandroom fixture

John Hayward opened the corner hotel in 1857. The City of Yarra’s heritage database classifies the Evelyn Hotel at 351–353 Brunswick Street as a contributory building within the Brunswick Street precinct, with fabric dating from 1870–1890. In 1968, Italian migrants Maria and Carlo D’Alessandro bought the pub and introduced weekend Italian music; the venue also credits them with bringing Fitzroy’s first coffee machine into service.

The family’s next decisive move came with the bandroom expansion around 1991. In a 2016 venue interview, staff described almost 25 years of an expanded room and live music seven nights a week, framing the Evelyn as a regular stage for young acts finding their feet. That long-running commitment remains a useful clue for audiences: bills can pair a release show, touring support and a local opener in one compact room.

The room today

Bandroom bookings are handled directly by the venue, and the programming mix reaches across indie, rock, alternative, electronic, folk, pop and metal, alongside occasional comedy and DJ-led events. Expect a standing, pub-scale show space with the public bar separate from the performance room; the venue also has a street-facing beer garden and side bar with a pool table. For sightlines, arriving early pays off: the 350-person capacity keeps the stage close, while a fuller room quickly becomes a shoulder-to-shoulder affair.
