Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle in Melbourne’s Brunswick is a roughly 500-capacity live-music pub whose large beer garden and free local bills make a gig feel like part of a full evening out. The building is Brunswick’s oldest original pub structure, with mid-19th-century bluestone hidden behind a 1939 façade. Music runs alongside food and a craft-beer list, giving early arrivals somewhere to settle before sets.

Goldfields stop, 1939 reset

The hotel opened in 1854, serving gold miners travelling between the populated inner suburbs and the fields around Essendon. That origin places the Edinburgh Castle in the rush-era traffic of Sydney Road, long before Brunswick developed its present-day music circuit. Local histories identify the hotel as the suburb’s oldest surviving original pub building, while the Retreat holds the earlier-pub claim through its 1842 opening.

A major 1939 refurbishment changed the street view: plaster and paint covered the bluestone structure, creating the façade that still fronts the hotel. The contrast matters for a showgoer: the exterior carries an interwar makeover, while the venue’s claim rests on an 1854 building beneath it. Edinburgh Castle now presents that old public-house framework as a seven-day pub with live entertainment at its centre.

Programming favours free local live music, with indie, folk, pop, R&B, rock, country, classical and jazz all appearing on the bill. Bands play from a dedicated front-bar stage, supported by house monitors and an Allen & Heath front-of-house mixer; the venue also lists a separate PA for the beer garden. Expect a pub layout with a front bar, dining areas and expansive outdoor space, plus craft beer and gastro-pub food between sets.
