About Corner Hotel
Corner Hotel is an 800-capacity live-music pub in Melbourne’s Richmond, built around a standing Bandroom that keeps audiences close to the stage. Its defining contrast comes from the building’s two speeds: a hard-charging downstairs concert room, then an upstairs pub and greenery-filled rooftop for a pre-show meal or post-show drink. The venue has presented artists including Mick Jagger, David Gilmour, The White Stripes and Crowded House.
A pub, a bandroom, and a U2 shoot
The Corner began life as a pub in 1871 and has hosted live music since the 1940s. The current two-storey hotel building dates from the 1960s, a later chapter in a site whose social history sits alongside Swan Street’s changing streetscape. Tim Northeast and Mathew Everett have run the venue since 1995, shaping its present identity as a regular home for local, national and international touring acts.
On 20 November 2006, the Bandroom became the setting for crowd scenes in U2’s “Window in the Skies” video. Three hundred fans formed a general-admission crowd with Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr.; the resulting footage placed the Corner inside a music video released that December.
The show-day shape
The booking mix runs through rock, metal, indie, pop, electronic, folk and country, with room for line-dancing parties alongside guitar-led bills. Bandroom booking enquiries go through CG Live. Inside, the flexible room has two bars, its own entrance and private bathrooms; it is primarily a standing concert space. A structural pillar remains a sightline factor for people watching from deep in the floor, so arriving early pays off for a clear view. Upstairs and on the rooftop, table seating creates an easy before-or-after-gig base.
