About Bar 303

303, commonly called Three-Oh, is a compact live-music bar in Northcote, Melbourne, with an unpublished capacity. Its defining detail sits behind the current façade: the site began as a 1920s butcher’s shop before becoming a café, coffee-roasting house and, in 2000, an arts café with music at its core. Today, the venue divides its action between a street-facing front bar and a dedicated band room, giving intimate sets and fuller-volume shows distinct homes.

A butcher’s shop becomes a High Street stage

Jack Moynihan and Tom Abud signed the lease in 2000, quit their jobs, built the bar and set out to create an arts café and music venue. The music side quickly became the central proposition, with Moynihan describing a Northcote where shopfront gigs and squats supplied much of the local action. In 2001, Moynihan, Abud and neighbouring traders launched the first High Vibes Festival; 303 hosted the late party as the street festival got underway. The venue also became a home for the Melbourne Ukulele Kollective, whose Klub M.U.K. has used 303 as a stage for developing ukulele performers since 2006.

Two rooms, wide-open ears

303’s programming leans toward independent artists and recurring community-led events, with jazz, acoustic music, blues, soul, funk, rock and electronic-adjacent bills all visible in its calendar. A regular Yarra Banks Jam welcomes players to sign up and sit in, while recent listings include spiritual jazz, gothic sounds and Guitar Kingdom’s quarterly guitar series. The glass-fronted bar has tables, a long curved wooden bar, a small stage and a vintage Hammond B3 with Leslie speaker. In the band room, an angled floor runs down toward the main stage and its updated sound system.
