About Zebulon

Zebulon is a 250-capacity concert room in Frogtown, Los Angeles, with a café, bar and patio folded into the same night out. Its most tangible link to the prior Brooklyn club is the 1930s wooden bar that co-owner Joce Soubiran kept in storage and shipped west. The Los Angeles home occupies a converted 1930 bakery, later used as a record-distribution warehouse, giving the place an industrial shell around a compact live room.

A Brooklyn club rebuilt by the river

Zebulon began in Williamsburg in 2003, founded by Parisian brothers Joce and Jef Soubiran with Guillaume Blestel as a café, bar and performance venue. In December 2012, after nine years, Joce Soubiran attributed its closure to escalating noise complaints from newer neighbors; he said a soundproofing-and-volume compromise would change the way the club operated. The founders carried the project to Los Angeles, joined by Mia Doi Todd, Jesse Peterson and Everloving Records partners. After permits and a build-out, the Frogtown Zebulon opened in April 2017. Its opening run made the program plain: an Alice Coltrane tribute, Jolie Holland, a French-electronic documentary and a set by Todd placed music, film and artist-led work under one roof.

The room and the bill

Zebulon’s current calendar spans indie, rock, alternative, metal, folk, electronic, jazz and country, alongside film, dance and comedy. Artists seeking a date submit music links and proposed dates by email; the venue says its team receives a heavy volume of inquiries. Most concerts are standing room only, while seated-show chairs go first come, first served. Step-free access covers the concert room, café, patio and restrooms. Onstage, an L-Acoustics PA and Midas Pro2 console support full-band bills, while turntables, CDJs and a projector suit DJ and audiovisual sets.
